Spanish Colonizing of Trinidad

Trinidad was originally discovered by Christopher Columbus and was claimed by Spain. Spain, being Trinidad's colonizer, influenced to religion and other cultural aspects of Trinidad. They Spanish people that settled there brought over many diseases, namely smallpox, that slowly killed off the natives there because they weren't immune to it. Also, Spain tried to convert the natives to Catholicism and anyone who rejected conversion were punished. Not only that, but anyone that wanted to settle in Trinidad had to be Christian. This influenced the religion of the people in Trinidad. Lastly, Spain brought many slaves over to Trinidad to grow sugar and cocoa. theses slaves where mainly Portuguese and African. This influenced the modern culture of Trinidad which is a unique mix of both and other ethnicity.

  1. I think that it is interesting and significant that so many colonies are affected by their colonizers to this day. Although the inhabitants of Trinidad faced the bad outcomes of the Spanish coming such as smallpox and being forced to change their religion, do you think there were good outcomes as well?

  2. I think that it was both sad and interesting that while Columbus "discovered" the New World for Europeans, he also made the lives of the natives miserable, and enslaved them and forced them to change to his religion. Columbus really did have a lasing affect on the natives.
