Colonization of Brazil

I read that the Portuguese were slow to clonize Brazil. But when they did they gave long strips of land to the captains in Brazil in which they had to protect the settlers that lived there. Also the natives weren't mean toward the settlers but they were taken advantage of and easily abused and killed. This was also caused by how the settlers made the natives slaves and overworked them to death.
