In 1603 the French came to Canada. With it they brought guns, knives, silverware, and many other things. They traded with the natives and one of the main occupations was cod fishery and fur trade. Canada was perfect for fur trade. France colonized most of Canada for about 150 years. In that time 10,000 immigrants came in, most of them were soldiers. At the end of the French regime about 1000 "salt smugglers".
In 1867 , the province of Canada, new Brunswick, and Nova Scotia became a federation under a goverment. It seemed that the French totally changed Canada, not only culturally but politically. Before the French there were native tribes like the Iroquois who constantly waged war with France. Their culture was almost completely taken from them and forgotten. These tribes had their own way of farming, because the soil was very poor, and hunting. Although France was fair with the other tribes in trading and interacting with them.
