Earthquake in Haiti
On Tuesday January 12th Haiti was hit by a devastating earthquake, with more then 30 aftershocks within 24 hours. This was already the poorest country in the Western Hemipshere and the entire country was basically destroyed. Though this quake lasted only 30 seconds it devastated everything. For nearly 15 minutes after the earthquake there was a grey pall of dust from the disintegration of buildings made from cheap cement and fires, big and small, broke out. 3,000 police and international peacekeepers tried to clear roads and direct the desperate traffic in the city of Port-au-Prince. On Thursday hundreds of dead bodies were still piled up on the streets and more than 500 people needed immediate surgury. Many countries including the US, Ireland, Cuba, and also the UN and other missinaries came to Haiti to help. Around 7000 people had been buried in a mass of buildings outside of the city, but that wasnt even close to the amount of bodies laying in the streets and the total death toll which is around 200,000.
