Colonization of Brazil

The article that I read was about the colonization of Brazil by the Portugese, Spanish and English. The Spanish originally colonized Brazil. Even though there was wood coming from Brazil, no one was really interested because alot was coming from India. The french and portugese entered Brazil even though Spain already had claims there. So what the Spanish King did was give someone authority to give away land. Also the Jesuits came to convert the indians that were living there because that way they could enter the country better. The indians received it very well until people started to take slaves. There were also deseases that came with the colonizers and so the indians were forced to sell themselves to save themselves.
It was said that if an indian wasn't colonized it would be treated as a heathen and therefore be able to be sold as a slave. Slave traders then just took the slaves without trying to convert them saying it was part of a "just war".
