The Early Colonization of Brazil
The colonization of Brazil began somewhere around April 22 of 1500 with a man named Pedro Alvares Cabral. He and his ship and Portugal people landed at the mouth of Rio Buranhem (which is on the Bahian Coast). The natives there were respectful and offered their sign of peace by laying their bows and arrows. They meant no harm to these strange, foreign men. The Portuguese people thought these natives' way of life was treacherous and decided they might benefit by being converted to Christians. After several years of land snatching, boundary stealing, language conversion, and slave trading, in the end these natives were converted, traded different places, and rid of their culture.
