british colonies and the caribbean

Protestantism came into the Caribbean when the Dutch and English came. They were trying to change what was already changed originaly by the Spanish. The natives in the Caribbean were the Caribs and the Arawaks. The natives were taken out and African slaves were brought over. In 1588 the Spanish Armada was destroyed. But, settlement did not begin until the 17th century. It started with Bermuda in 1609. Slaves were needed urgently to work in the fields/plantations in the Bahamas. That involved British alot in the slave trade. Twelve Caribbean countries make up the Caribbean Community and Common Market. This was established in 1973. The Caribbean Free Trade Association was established in 1968 by five former British colonies. Basically, religion was affected by the colonization of the British. As we all know, religion is a very important factor in identity.

  1. It's really sad how much power the Dutch and the English had over the Caribs. They completely took over and even brought over people from other countries as slaves. I don't get who's religion was changed or effected though.
