Response to The End of Poverty
I completely agree that if countries would commit to actually helping eradicate extreme poverty, it could be accomplished. The idea that aid is subject to the will of the donors is not new, nor is the idea that donors want something in return for this aid. This makes it very hard for any country that receives aid to pay back in full any interest or make sure all agreements are settled, because if they received aid from more than one country, they have to satisfy the wants of all those donors. The graph showing how much more official development assistance was needed by some countries to reach the .7% commitment was shocking. The US was by far the worst on the graph with almost 60 billion dollars needed to reach the commitment of .7% of the gross national product. Although we had the highest official development assistance, we also have the farthest to go. I think that if the US gets with the program, we can all be a big part of helping the world rid itself of extreme poverty.
