Question 6

Some of the arguments that were presented came from articles in the Edinburgh Times which included the canal not being level so no dock could be constructed. It was frequently referred to as a "stagnant ditch". And finally, expense and finance was an issue. It was claimed that this would be too expensive to construct, and transporting the cargo and goods in other ways, such as by railway would make things much easier. As we now know, these arguments were proved false as the canal became a significant achievement and success for the British.
