According to Open Source Initiative, open sourcing is "a development method for software that harnesses the power of distributed peer review and transparency of process". In other words, everyone has the power to make software. As said by Thomas L. Friedman in his lecture about his book The World is Flat (a book about globalization), software that can be used for free will become more popular than software made by big corporations that cost money. This is true especially when the software made by people making it for fun and selling it for free is better than the expensive software sold by corporations.
An example of open sourcing that I thought was interesting was when two people from different countries (including a 19 year-old named Blake Ross) created Firefox. They made big company search engines less popular, and is very popular right now. Think about it...are you using Firefox right now? I know I am...

I also said that open sourcing is just for anyone who wants to make programs and codes for computers. Also, it is very true about softwares that are free hurting big corporations and their business -that happened with Firefox and Microsoft.
ReplyDeleteI agree that open sourcing is something that is very useful. The example of Firefox was a good one because it shows that because of the open code, two people who didn't even know each other were able to create a very-well known company today. Because of Netscape's original open code, many internet browsers that we know today branched from that code. So therefore, open sourcing is very beneficial to society.
