Open sourcing is a new type of way for "flattening" the world. It is a new flattner that basically just allows anyone to come up with new codes, programs and all for computers. This can be beneficial for a few reasons: 1) people (geeks) can do this for free because they find it fun to do; 2) new and better programs can be made; 3) the programs being made can be cheaper than other programs out there. A great example of this is Firefox. If you did not know, Firefox was created by a 19 year old Stanford student and a 24 yr old. These two people did not even know each other and they were able to create a internet browser that is faster, safer, and more efficient. Firefox is number two in the most used browser behind Microsoft. Also, another reason why Firefox became popular quickly is because it was free to download-you didn't have to pay AND it was a better browser.
So, as you can see open sourcing is a way that will be flattening the world more by things working together like never before. It's all apart of globalization.
