PBS Wide Angle Video

This movie interested me by describing seven different lifestyles of education from students of a variety of countries around the world. It is very true that we think of education as a necessary right. I found it interesting that in some countries, such as Afganistan, there are groups that do not believe women should be educated. It is interesting because some of the kids cannot handle schoolwork because they have so many more obligations to fulfill when they are home. These kids have the will and determination to succeed, and to overcome all obstacles. It reveals the importance of education to these kids, that is primarily why I enjoyed this movie.

  1. This movie gave me a deeper appretiation of the fact that education is so accessable for people all across America, including me. I was stunned to hear Neejaj from India who had to quit her only means of education (night school) to go and find water due to the drought. She has to work all day then go to school at night. It really made me think of how fortunate we are as a society to have access to education, whether that be public or private. Also the fact that in the video they showed a girl who was complaining just about taking out te trash where this Indian girl has to walk miles and miles by herself just to find water. It really made me stop and think about the next time I'm asked to do chores that would be considered easy to a girl like Neejaj. The other pattern I noticed throughout the majority of the children is that they want more than anything to go to school and become something, but their country lacks the ability to have them go to school. Shugufa really impressed me because she had all of these goals set out for what she wants to be when she's living in a culture where most women have lost hope trying to make something out of themselves. Overall, the determination and struggle for basic needs in these countries has opened my eyes to value their determination and the fact that I have an education that is so accessable.

  2. I also find it interesting that certain people are frowned upon if they go to school and that some people dont even have the time to go to school. When they do they treasure it and we just find it annoying, it opens my eyes to how we take most things for granted and in other countries the same things are thought of as special privelages
