PBS video
I think that the movie was very interesting. It showed different lifestyles and how school relates to them. It is interesting to see the differences of how people view an education. Here, it's something we take for granted and have to do. In the movie, one girl's mother said what's the point in going to school? She thought her daughter should be at home doing chores, not at school learning. Also, the governments of some of the countries do not support girls going to school. This is all very different from our country. Also, most of the kids in the video have other things to do too, like chores. They have to find time for these, school, and studying for school. This makes it difficult, but most of the kids do it somehow.

Nice post Liana! I completely agree with you. As I said before, it's all about how the culture's history is that can sway people to certain perspectives on a numerous amount of things. One being education. The mother wasn't too apt on really getting her daughter into school because SHE was probably treated the same way when she was younger. In that kind of society, a female education just really doesn't seem important. It's just like the U.S. not really big on females working in jobs most men did in the early 1900s and back.
ReplyDeleteGreat post Liana! I said something similar in my reaction also. I totally agree with you. This movie, I think, makes us all realize of how greatful we are to go to an excellent school, with an excellent community. And yes, it is very different from our community. I really enjoyed this post!
ReplyDeleteI agree that it is very interesting to see how education is viewed upon in other countries. Some parents did not even believe it was necessary for an education. It definitely gave me a perspective to realize how fortunate I am to go to MFS and have the opportunity to have a great education.
