After I read about the Confucian Family, I closed the book and said, "huh" with an almost satisfied-yet-completely-angry-and-at-the-same-time-confused look on my face. I personally find this lifestyle to be half-and-half with me. Here's why:
PROS:
-Keeps family always together (I love family, and it is an ideal part of your life)
-Does stimulate group thinking.
-Has room to make sure all are doing their job and playing their proper role.
CONS (compared to the way I live, swaying my perspective):
-Family is just too close for comfort. Staying over for the holiday or special event is cool, but you actually LIVE with me? Harder to live in the same household as it gets larger with each generation (can't leave unless you're a female about to get married into another family, but the problem resorts again).
-No room for individualism.
-Roles don't see all that balanced.
-# 1 con: women roles are just not fine with me.
A family and life should be about balance. I don't think one should be completely overpowering the other or able to do this and someone can't do that. However, it was funny to see how alike somethings were. Such as a man's wife and mother-in-law not really liking eachother. There is nothing new about that, it happened back then in China, and it still happens all over the world! I guess if one lives in such a society, this is completly the norm for them (like women binding their feet). For a foreigner like me, in my opinion of a female, this is torture.

This is a nice point. Family should be together and all should play a role but the whole thing with the women not leaving until they get married into another family is rough.
ReplyDeletefor the part about the entire family living together it is not really that strange to me. My cousins live with my Grandparents and they seem like an average american family so for me the whole family living together thing is not really a big deal
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Shanelle with the foot binding thing. This seems lke torture to you because your from a different culture, but over there in Ancient China, this was the thing. Foot binding over there is like getting highlights or painting nails over here. It's just the norm.
ReplyDeleteThe pros and cons, were similar to what I thought after reading those pages. Also, with what chuchu says I understand how since that is the norm, it doesn't bug them as much. I also disagree that everyone would be fine with it, because like many years ago when America had little rights for woman, they grew sick and protested. I hope they gain more woman's rights eventually.
