Swaziland Constitution

The newest Swaziland Constitution was adopted in 2005. This "upgraded" constitution is the one I looked at for my homework. I found 3 things that connected directly with Enlightenment ideals. First, the constitution gives the people the right to practice any religion. This idea came from Voltaire. Next, the constitution gives the right to life, equality, and severity of person; much related to John Locke and his idea of the human right to life, liberty, and property. Lastly, the people of Swaziland have the freedom from torture, cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment. This idea came from Beccaria. The whole constitution of Swaziland can be viewed on the website hyperlinked to my title.

  1. Simone,
Good link and the constitution uses all of the philosophers ideas that you listed. This was very informative and I didnt know that Swaziland followed a constitution. What do you mean by upgraded constitution though?

  2. Great job Simone,
Your country was much like mine because both countries believed in equality and a freedom of religion. What exact type of government is Swaziland?

  3. Great post and also great country to have picked! I liked how you connected the equality of the country to John Locke. And Tevin, I was going to ask the same exact question... What type of government does Swaziland have?

  4. Thanks guys! Im going to answer your questions in order. Ben, by upgraded constitution I meant that they had an original constitution, but they amended it to better cover human rights. Tevin and Emily, Swaziland is a constitutional monarcy. More information can be seen on this site...http://www.traveldocs.com/sz/govern.htm
