Maquilladors and Dependency Theory

The dependency theory is a theory that was created in the 1950's that explains how less developed countries and developed countries interact with each other. In this theory, it is though of that developed countries have power over less developed countries, and will usually use that power, because of their stronger economic position on the global scale. It also explains that developed countries and less developed countries will continue to interact with each other in the future.
I searched for a while to find the definition of maquilladors, and I came up with two different definitions. I'm not sure which one is correct. One states that it is a factory, which produces items to be exported oversees, and the other says that it is a power plant.
