Dependency Theory and Maquilladors
Maquilladors are basically sweat shops owned by countries like the US. Workers are not paid much, and work long hours under harsh conditions. The Dependency Theory states that economic development in powerful developed countries isn't always beneficial to less powerful underdeveloped countries. Maquilladors can be considered an example of this. Many people disagree on whether or not sweat shops are good or bad. As we read in The End of Poverty, sweat shops can be seen as the first step in developing a better economy. However, many people see sweat shops as inhumane.
