Aristotle
Aristotle was a great thinker of his time. During his time( Ancient Greece), there wasn't much thinking about the order of the planets. He started something that was completely unheard of, when he started to make theories about where the planets were located. Aristotle did not have any technology at all, only his eyes. He theorized that the earth was in the center of the universe and that the sun revolved around it, as well as all of the other planets. This was a pretty good prediction for his time. Thousands of years later, the church adopted this theory because it agreed with the bible. However, Aristotle did not believe in Christianity. Aristotle started a whole line of scientists trying to figure out where in our solar system the earth was located.

It's really interesting to think that someone went against relgion and the "norms" of such a traditional society. Although his theory was provern incorrect, it's still important to give Aristotle credit because he was really the first person to study the planets. In his society this was unheard of, like you said. Without Aristotle, scientists wouldn't have had that jump start to studying the planets without his ideas.
ReplyDeleteIt seems like Aristotle started the whole procession of people thinking about the planets and the earth and its relation to the rest of the universe. Even though his theories were incorrect, it is amazing he was able to construct these theories without having any technology to view the sky better and during an age in which people didn't really think about the planets and Earth and its relation to the rest of the universe.
ReplyDeleteAristotle was pretty out fetched with the geocentric idea. But, it definitely was a start considering no one even thought about things like that. Surly, he planted the seed for other scientist after him to think about how the planets work and all. The scientist I wrote about also agreed with the earth centered theory.
