Here is an interesting article about the current elections in Uruguay with a brief mention of the historical domination of one party.
Dr. Tabare Vazquez (of the Frente Amplio Party, marked the first change in a hundred plus years of single party control) has had much success over the last few years in improving quality of life (education (see One Laptop Per Child), healthcare, and infrastructure).
Read this article for detailed information about the election and changing socio-political climate in Uruguay. Lastly, feel free to post comments, reactions or questions to it as well. - Mr. Stetina

correction: he actually fought against the democracy in Uruguay not the dictatorship. Once a farmer nearby his house found something and then his his guerilla group had him captured and killed.
ReplyDeleteI am interested to learn more about this Aaron. Could you include a source if at all possible. When you say 'he' do you mean Dr. Vazquez or the Frente Amplio's new candidate, Jose Mujica? Please elaborate on your response.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I was discussing the election last night via skype with my family in Uruguay and it has been very insightful to hear their comments about how things are there on the ground. It is important to note that 46% of the population voted for Mujica, reflecting their support not for him exclusively, but also the Frente Amplio party. Any thoughts?
