Letter from Leeds Cloth Merchants, 1791

This statement was written by the cloth merchants of leeds, which was a major center of wool manufacture in Yorkshire. In this statement the merchants of this wool company were defending machines and explained how it would make improvements in cloth-dressing. They explained that if they had the use of machines their trade would have greater advantages and create amazing success. They also pointed out that the other manufacturing companies have done so well with the use of machines and that it would greatly help them too

  1. I think it's really interesting how machines that we now rely on so much were unheard of until the Industrial Revolution. Hearing about people who had to work to convince others that machines would increase productivity from a modern standpoint is shocking. I think that machines doing work for us is something we now take for granted.

  2. I agree with Maggie. Now we use machines for everything and it wouldn't make sense in this day in age to do things withput machines. I also agree that we take these things for granted because most people haven't lived without them and don't know what it is like not having them.
