Galileo Galilei

Galileo was an Italian astronomer he was the first person to use the telescope to gaze at the stars in the night sky. Previously the only way to look the stars was through the naked eye. By looking through a telescope Galileo discovered, amongst other things that Jupiter had multiple moons that orbited it. A larger planet with smaller orbs orbiting it did not conform to Aristotelian Cosmology, which was accepted at that time. He named these moons after the powerful medici family. In addition to that he discovered that the moon was made of rock, and had mountains, valleys and "oceans".

  1. i thought that this post was very imformative but it is missing that galileo was forced by the church to give up his ideas on the universe and was put on house arrest for the rest of his life. this was a huge event because it kind of aided the discovery of gravity by newton in later years.

  3. I agree that this post was pretty informative and described his life and backround. You didn't mention how he got his inspiration or this idea. He read Kepler's book "New Astronomy". He believed it all, and bought into the idea. At the that time their were telescopes, but they were very rare. Galileo bought a Dutch telescope. I wander what would happen if the church didn't put Galileo on house arrest, maybe their would be new discoveries for this day.
