Vanishing Cultures

Hello everyone. This is our formal introduction on the blog to the second quarter theme, Issues of Identity. We spent class time this week introducing the idea of identity and culture. You have all expressed your own understandings of these terms as well as debate about American culture. We will continue to build a working vocabulary about components of identity and culture to help us understand our own, and then explore that of others.

Please read this article (linked to the title) about National Geographic's Wade Davis (PhD from Harvard) discuss vanishing cultures. If we can agree that there is such a thing as culture, although it is a complex, difficult thing to define, then we must consider the significance of losing it. The loss of culture not only affects individuals and local communities but also all members of the human family as we are innately and inevitably interconnected.

Feel free to post responses to this article or post another about culture and your views about it. Thank you and we're off to another great quarter. Keep up the good work!
